OnK Venue / Caterer Hunt: Oasis Manila and Hizon's Catering

We had our second venue and catering hunt last February 16 at Oasis Manila with Hizon's. Hizon's Catering and Oasis Manila has been one of the top choices of future couples for their wedding. I know that the rates these suppliers are offering are out of the budget. But if we'll like it, we're ready to compensate.

Oasis Manila

Oasis Manila
They're setting up for an evening wedding. Unfortunately. it rained later in the afternoon.  Hmmm... I wonder what happened with the ceremony.

It was my first time at Oasis Manila. Its vicinity is along the busy streets of Aurora. The venue is quite unnoticeable and far from our church, the reason why  I immediately said 'no' to the venue.

Oasis Manila has three halls namely, Pavilion, Verandah and Orchard. During the food tasting, two other events were also held - a birthday party at the Orchard and a wedding reception at the Pavilion. Among the three, I prefer the Pavilion because it has an all-around view of the garden. But it will be too big for our 150 guests event. Orchard best suits are venue needs but unfortunately, we were not able to see the events hall because a birthday party was happening at the same time the food tasting was being held. This is another cons for me. As much as possible, we want a place where we can have privacy. Meaning, there are no other events happening at the same time, our wedding reception is being held.

We did not have that 'this is it' feeling for Oasis Manila to be our wedding venue. And so we had to look for another venue.

Hizon's Catering

I really want Hizon's to be my caterer the first day I started planning for my wedding. However, when I checked their rates, I realized that I have to look for a more affordable caterer that will suit our budget. But then again, we wanted to check if the price they offer is worth it so we attended their food tasting.
The event was held at Oasis Manila's Verandah. Compared with Rich Gold, I liked the latter's styling more than Hizon's. What we saw on that day was a very basic setup. But I can say that the food they offer are way better than Rich Gold. They're of average but I can still say that they're dishes are satisfying.

Our personal choices during the event are the following:

Soup: Cream of Pumpkin 5/5

Hizon's Catering
Truffled Three Mushroom  and Cream of Pumpkin Soup
I thought that this will literally taste like pumpkin. But no! It's delicious that I could ask for a second bowl.

Appetizer: Caramelized Onion and Cheddar Canape and Candied Bacon and Macerated Apple Canape (3/5)

Hizon's Catering
Tempura Rolls, Beef Ssam Fresh Spring Rolls, Caramelized Onion and Cheddar Canape, Candied Bacon and Macerated Aple Canape
They're average tasting canapes but it's better than the spring rolls

Main Entree: Pastel de Lengua, Beef Salpicao, Thriced Cooked Pork Belly, Baked Fish with Spinach, Fish Fillet with Mango Salsa, Shiitake Mushroom Fried Rice (5/5)

Hizon's Catering
Pastel de Lengua, Beef Salpicao, Chicken Sambal, California Roast Chicken, Rice Cooked Pork Belly with Mango Cilantro Salsa, Glazed Pork Oriental with Carrots and Jimaca, Baked Fish with Spinach, Fish Fillet with Mango Salsa, Seasoned Vegetables in Brown Butter, Shiitake Mushroom Fried Rice

What we most like on the main entree are their fish dishes. It's one of the best fish dish we had. The baked fish with spinach melts in your mouth while the fish fillet with mango salsa perfectly blends with the sauce. Fiance also liked the Pastel de Lengua because it was so soft and easy to eat.

Pasta: Fettucine / Penne / Carbonara and Neopolitana (5/5)

We are both pasta lovers so we are quite strict when it comes to choosing on their pasta dishes. But what we had during the food tasting, made it more confusing. we loved it! We can't just choose one.

(Oh! I just realized that I don't have a photo of the pastas hehehe)

Dessert: Creme Brulee (3/5)

Hizon's Catering
Mango and Peach Crepe Samurai, Mango Pandan Panna Cotta, Red Velvet Cupcake, Vanilla Creme Brulee, Blueberry Cheescake
I have lots of expectation when it comes to Hizon's dessert. But it failed us. Out of the five sweets that were served, only the creme brulee appealed to us.

Salad: None (1/5)

Hizon's Catering
Mango Salad with Peach Mango Vinaigrette Dressing and Asian Salad with Crispy Molo Strips

The only food we did not like was their salad. I did not even included it here. I'm giving it a 1 out 5 rating because it tasted really bad.

As for their account executive, I find them unfriendly (Or they just felt that we are not booking them at all hahahaha). Although she offered us a lower rate for the menu and additional freebies, I can still feel that she's not interested with us being her client. Unlike with RichGold's AE, which had a more friendly and professional manner, this lady (which I can't even remember the name) is the exact opposite.

All in all, the food tasting experience is just average. If we had a more enthusiastic and friendly AE, we could have booked Hizon's. Comparing the offer with our previous food tasting, Rich Gold still has a better offer.

Let's see if I'll finally find the perfect venue and caterer this coming weekend.

Happy Preps!
