Omi's Review: Miracle in Cell No. 7
Saturday, November 02, 2013
The first time I saw Miracle in Cell No. 7's trailer on a website, it instantly caught my attention and touched my heart. I want to watch it immediately. Teary eyed, I've tried scouring the net to download the film. Unfortunately, the English subtitle was not yet available.
I've been googling the film from time to time until I forgot about it. But not until I've come across a Facebook post of a former colleague about the flick. Searched it again and voila! Finally! It now has a subtitle!

Miracle in Cell No. 7 is the heartwarming story of Lee Yong-gu (Ryu Seung-ryong), a mentally-challenged father wrongfully accused of murder and rape. He was imprisoned and befriends his cell mates, who later on helped his precious 6-year old daughter, Lee Ye-Sung (Park Shin Hye) to break in their cell. So what's the miracle on this film? You have to watch it and see for yourself.
For now, I'll be posting some screenshots of the scenes. In a way, some spoilers as well. So to those who despise spoilers, you can now stop reading. But to those who are too curious about this Lunar New Year offering, scroll down.
In the name of justice, I will punish you. Sailor Moon!
Hana, deul, set! This scene is so adorable. You can see that aside from having a father and daughter relationship, they're also bestfriends.
Lee Yong-Go's first day in Cell No.7
And his gangster prison mates...
How could a little girl fit in that box?! Amazing!
I was teary-eyed on this part. Forever hating Sailor Moon because of this movie :(
How sweet! I wouldn't mind having gangster 'ahjussis' if they're as sweet and kind as this.
Yesung pleading the Chief warden to also arrest her to be with his father again.
The day the Chief realized that Yong-gu was innocent, he let Ye-Sung to live with them again.
Yong-gu's final trial is fast approaching. So his supportive friends teach him how to answer the questions properly and win the case.
Everything was perfect. Not until the day of his final trial where he was brutally abused again by the Chief of Police (it was his daughter who died). He threatened Yong-Gu that if he will not accept the judgment, something might happen to his beloved daughter. They left him with no choice but to accept the crime he never did :(
Yong-gu's prisonmates already knew about his execution date. And as a last gift, they made a hot air balloon in reference to Yesung's drawing on their wall.
It's really unfortunate to know that you have to die on your daughter's birthday. Their last meal together was very touching.
And these parts were heartbreaking. Yong-gu and Ye-seung wept in their last goodbye as they're forcibly torn away from each other. My tears won't stop falling. Seriously, I'm teary-eyed again while writing this review.
Aside from Park Shin Hye, who portrayed the 'older' version of Yesung, the movie doesn't have a stellar cast. Surprisingly, every supporting actors/actresses nailed their scenes.
The award-winning portrayal of Ryu Seung-ryong as the father, was exceptional (although it reminded me of Sean Penn on I Am Sam). Kal So-Won who played the young Ye-Sung was also amazing. She was really cute and at the same time very witty. It was so natural for her to act the scenes. The other characters, specially the prison mates of cell number 7, were also great. They may not be as popular as the other stars in Korea, but I can proudly say that without these talented veteran actors, the movie wouldn't be as successful as it is now.
A movie that is part comedy and part drama which in some way, tackles the reality. A humorous and heart-wrenching film that shows how cruel and unfair the world is to those who are intellectually impaired. The experience of watching Miracle in Cell No. 7 was like a roller coaster. it made me laugh so hard in some scenes and at the same time, made me cry a river. At first, I was just sobbing. But little by little, my heart started to ache and fall into pieces. Then my eyes got swollen and my nose turned red.
All in all, I'm giving a rating of 20 out of 10 stars. Yes I'm overrating this masterpiece as I haven't cried this much over a film since Ashita no Kioku and Zettai Kareshi. Make sure you have something to wipe your tears away because I'm pretty sure you'll cry more than a bucket of tears. I bet even the person with the coldest heart will melt on this Lee Hwan-kyung creation.
Worth-watching. This flick really deserves recognition not only in Korea, but also in other countries as well. I'm hoping that it can also be shown here in our country, because this is something everyone should watch and appreciate.
